Surat is the 2nd largest city in Gujarat with a population of about 3.0 Million. Surat is situated on the banks of the Tapi River, one of the 3 perennial rivers in Gujarat. The city until the last decade though on the banks of the Tapi river faced major water shortages as it lied in the inter tidal zone resulting in saline water in the river near the Surat City. In the early 90’s , a weir cum causeway was constructed near the Singanpore area in the city which resulted in creation of large fresh water reservoir in the river. With the launch of Jawarharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM) by the Ministry of Urban Development, Govt of India , it was decided to augment the water supply of the city in such a way so as to reduce physical and non physical water losses and also provide water supply 24×7 with metering through creation of DMA’s.(District Metering Associations)

The city of Surat which until 2006 was 112 sq km became 311 sq km by addition of new areas in the periphery affected by urbanisation. This resulted in the requirement of Water Infrastructure in these areas.

To augment the entire water system of the city, the following projects were indentified for which detailed project reports were prepared by MMCPL alongwith SMC engineers and were approved by JnNURM Directorate after technical appraisal by the CPHEEO (Central Public Health Engineering Dept), Govt of India :

1. Augmentaiton Of Sarthana, Katargam And Rander Water Works (Area Served 112.89 Sq Km)
